Vietnamese Alphabet

The modern Vietnamese alphabet consists of English letters and derivatives. In this way, the Vietnamese Language is made up of 29 letters. However, the following letters are not represented in the Vietnamese alphabet: F, J, W, and  Z.

With that said, however, most of the sounds are still represented by other Vietnamese alphabet and clusters. The one exception to this is the letter: J. There is no J sound in the Vietnamese Language.

Vietnamese AlphabetInterestingly, Vietnamese speakers from different areas of Vietnam will consistently pronounce certain alphabet differently. Northern Vietnamese speakers seem to prefer the “z” sound for some letters and cluster while Southern Vietnamese speakers favor the “y” sound. In Central Vietnam, you may hear a combination of the two sound as the different dialects continue to merge and evolve.
